Merchant Marine ships in the Pacific had to maneuver mines, enemy submarines, airplanes, kamikaze and withstand the natural elements to deliver the necessities of fighting a war.
Nearly 70 years after serving in the Pacific during World War II, veteran Jim Pfafflin is receiving his due. Merchant Marine were pinned to the 88 year old's chest during a ceremony on April 11 at Beacon Hill, a senior living community in Lombard.

Lombard veteran receives medals decades after WWII
Pfafflin, who previously lived in Clarendon Hills, entered the merchant marine after attending the Merchant Marine Academy. He served from 1944 to 1948 and rose from the rank of seaman to ensign. After the war, he attended mortuary school and worked as an Prada Glasses Frames Men undertaker throughout the Chicago area.
"I feel like I'm part of the country now," Pfafflin said before receiving the Merchant Marine Emblem, Honorable Service button, Pacific War Zone Bar and Victory medal.
Cmdr. Michelangelo DiCosola of VFW Lilac Post 5815 said he was proud to pin the medals on Pfafflin's chest.
"He was always very private about it," Lemm said. "He always felt like a civilian so this is really nice."
Pfafflin's daughter in law, Ellen Pfafflin, started the paperwork that resulted in the veteran finally getting his medals. She said the family became interested in securing Pfafflin's death benefits and medals after his wife, Catherine, who was in the Women's Army Corps. during World War II, died three years ago.

At the April 11 ceremony, members of the VFW saluted Pfafflin, and students from St. John's Lutheran School in Lombard dressed in costume as famous historic figures and delivered short biographical summaries of those peoples' lives.
