PITTSFIELD, MASS. Anyone one who has read "Lord of the Flies" will always remember the chilling terror of the William Golding work. Indeed, the novel questioning how young men would behave if isolated from civilized society has so impacted our culture the title has become a catch phrase for the breakdown of social norms during which group turns against group.
Oddly, as the hunters become more vicious and their behavior more cruel, the work becomes less interesting because it becomes repetitious and predictable.
A rare stage version "Lord of the Flies" is on view at Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, Mass. through October 21. The Nigel Williams adaptation is faithful to the source material, but except on rare occasions it lacks the psychological terror of the original.
The portrayals do not help as the capable actors are very good in establishing their characters. What director Giovanna Sardelli does not do is to push them to build a Nylon Prada Bag
Matthew Minor does a solid job in showing the nerd Piggy as the voice of reason. However his large frame makes it a bit difficult to believe he is such a fragile individual. The rest of the cast does good work at finding the essence of their characters.
Before long disagreements become rivalries and rivalries become conflicts. The island becomes a battleground between civilization and barbarianism and the strong begin to oppress the weak.
Unfortunately, this production of "Lord of the Flies" is little more than a play about boys Prada Yellow Bag

The first section is the most compelling. Ten privileged young men survive a plane crash that leaves them on an isolated island. Almost immediately conflicts arise and a battle for leadership begins. The young men quickly find themselves in opposing camps with one group striving to shape social order by establishing rule and a code of conduct. The other group wants to go rogue and return to a more primitive Prada Wallet Black Red Inside
character. The only change is each character become more extreme in their behavior.
acting badly very badly. This is too bad, as the thoughts and lessons in the play are still chillingly timely.
During this erosion of order the production is tight, taut and tense. The drama comes not so much from what is happening but from the fear of what is about to happen. Once the worst fears become reality the work loses its psychological validity and becomes a work about brutality and hurtful behavior. Though the staging is always energetic and visually exciting it fails to provoke the mind.
style of life that would reflect their new environment.
Richard Dent is an affable Ralph who is elected chief but he projects a whiney quality that makes him seem more like a willing victim than a leader. Will Bradley plays his rival, the power hungry Roger, more as a prep school bully than as a sadistic "Heart of Darkness" sadist. The power struggle between the two loses it existentialist undercurrent and it becomes a play about extreme bullying more than it is a work about the collapse of civilization.
